Where is Ku Sungula Safari Lodge?
Ku Sungula Safari Lodge is located inside the Balule Private Nature Reserve in Limpopo, South Africa.
Balule is one of the private reserves that forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park, meaning there are no fences separating the reserve from Kruger itself.
Wildlife moves freely between the parks, giving guests exceptional opportunities to see Africa’s famous animals in their natural habitat.
The lodge is approximately one hour from Hoedspruit Airport, making it one of the most convenient safari lodges to reach.
Arriving at Ku Sungula Safari Lodge
The adventure began the moment we landed at Hoedspruit Airport.
A friendly member of the Ku Sungula team greeted us before our scenic transfer through the African bush.
Even the drive to the lodge felt like a game drive. We spotted wildlife, admired the beautiful landscapes, and watched our excitement build with every kilometre.
When we finally arrived, we were welcomed with traditional singing, dancing, refreshing drinks, and genuine South African hospitality.
Ku Sungula, which means “New Beginning” in the Tsonga language, certainly lived up to its name.
Luxury Accommodation at Ku Sungula Safari Lodge
Our traditional African Rondawel perfectly blended rustic charm with modern luxury.
The room was beautifully decorated using natural colours inspired by the surrounding bush, creating a peaceful atmosphere that immediately helped us relax.
One of our favourite features was our private deck overlooking the reserve, where we could already see wildlife wandering in the distance before our first safari even began.

Our First Game Drive at Ku Sungula Safari Lodge
Nothing could have prepared us for our very first afternoon safari.
Within only a few hours of entering the reserve, we had managed to spot all of Africa’s famous Big Five:
🦁 Lion
🐘 Elephant
🦏 Rhinoceros
🐆 Leopard
🐃 Buffalo
Our guide explained that while many visitors eventually see all five animals during their stay, seeing every member of the Big Five on your very first drive is incredibly rare.
Needless to say, we felt extremely lucky.
Watching lions relaxing in the evening sun, a leopard disappearing into the trees, rhinos grazing peacefully, playful elephant calves walking beside their mothers, and buffalo standing watchful in the distance was simply unforgettable.
Two Days Exploring Kruger National Park
The following morning we left the private reserve and headed into the world-famous Kruger National Park.
Unlike the more intimate game drives inside Balule, Kruger offers endless landscapes, incredible biodiversity and some of Africa’s best wildlife viewing.

Our knowledgeable guide, Muxe, introduced us to some of Kruger’s most iconic wildlife while sharing fascinating stories about the animals and ecosystem.

Every drive felt completely different.
Exploring Balule Private Nature Reserve
After returning to Ku Sungula, we spent the next two days exploring the beautiful Balule Private Nature Reserve.
Early morning safaris quickly became our favourite part of each day.
As the sun rose across the African savanna, we searched for fresh animal tracks while listening to birds beginning their morning chorus.
Our guide constantly amazed us with his incredible knowledge, explaining:

Bird identification
Medicinal plants
Animal tracking
Conservation efforts
The delicate balance of the ecosystem
One unforgettable moment came when an enormous white rhino walked incredibly close to our safari vehicle.
It was equal parts thrilling and humbling.
Olifants River Boat Cruise
One of the highlights included in the Bush and Elephant Package was the Olifants River Boat Cruise aboard the Kambaku.
Over three relaxing hours we slowly cruised one of the largest rivers in Kruger National Park while enjoying drinks and snacks.
Along the riverbanks we spotted:

🐊 Crocodiles
🐃 Buffalo
🐘 Elephants
🦌 Waterbuck
🐦 Numerous bird species
The peaceful pace offered a completely different perspective compared with the excitement of the game drives.
Our Final Morning Safari
Sadly, every safari must eventually come to an end.
For our final drive we revisited several of our favourite areas around the reserve.
Almost as if Africa was giving us one last farewell, we encountered a huge breeding herd of elephants gathered around a waterhole before spotting several relaxed hyenas nearby.
It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable week.
